oh perfect morning
you are my
soaring prayer

* * *

There are those perfect mornings when everything seems to soar without effort,
especially when you’re on vacation! Took one week off and spent the last week
focusing on my photography goals… when and how to take the next step. For years,
I’ve promised prints to those of you who have written to me and have decided to
finally dive into it and start the process. Let me put it on record (to keep myself
honest)… this will be the year prints, and hopefully other items, will be available.

Thank you to each of you who left your thoughtful comments on my recent postings.
I look forward to sharing many of my vacation images from the Northern CA coast.

The Winter Solstice

On this, the darkest day of the year, I watched the sliver of the moon rise as the
glorious dawn began to open. The branches shivered with the rush of the morning
wind and so did I as I thought about all the love shared during this season. So
much light in each of us… enough to set the world aglow everyday of the year.

I want to wish all of you much LIGHT & LOVE as you gather with friends and family.
And I want to say THANK YOU for all that you have shared with me this past year,
making my life richer and lighter for it.

With much gratitude,

Snatched

I recently rented a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens and immediately
took it out to a new area with hopes of finding some wildlife. It was
exciting to see hummingbirds, squirrels and sea birds all within a few
feet. This Great Egret, in particular, caught my attention. I watched
it for some time as it slowly waded in the water and had my camera ready
as it eagerly snatched its prey.

When I saw the detail of the fish on my computer, I couldn’t help but
imagine what it must feel like to be suddenly snatched out of one’s
environment. I suppose, in some way, we will all experience this one
day. Until then, I’m going to keep swimming!

Happy Weekend, everyone.

This one is for my husband, Bob who has been rising before dawn since
September to carefully care for his grapes. He’s out for an early morning
harvest today. Just a few more to go! We both are looking forward to having
this season come to a close.

Thanks for all your visits and thoughts, everyone, especially on the last
posting. All are greatly appreciated!

Autumn Leaves - No. 4

Become More Golden

I recently wrote of the passing of loved ones… one of them was a 92 year old
friend. Though his death was not unexpected, it was still sad, especially for
his wife of 67 years. I was with her as she sat with her husband shortly after
he had died. Through her deep, mournful tears she said to me, “Diane, life is
so, so sad.” And so it was, especially at that moment.

In the days that have followed, the autumn light has become more golden and so
too, have the memories. This couple had spent 67 seasons together, a span that
I can’t even begin to imagine. I know they shared much joy and too much sorrow
yet it was a journey together. How my friend will go on without her husband,
I’m not sure but this I do know…

Life requests that we be fully awake in the most sorrowful and most joyful of
moments. For only in doing so can we experience a lifetime of richness and
enlightenment that each season brings.

In the last 3 months, I have experienced the passing of three loved ones.
Each of their deaths were marked with a mixture of sadness and celebration
we will find ourselves surrounded by all those we love. And that our
leaving will be soft...

Just as the leaves change, so must we.

I love everything about autumn… the warm light, the luscious colors and the
long shadows that remind us, everything changes. The descending leaves
of course, are the greatest reminder of this. I have always tried to show
some self-control each year in how many images of leaves I post but have
decided this season to let go and let them fall where they will. They won’t
necessarily be in unison or so colorful but be forewarned, they will
be plentiful.

all it had swept away. I often think about how our personal objects absorb
Meditation is a daily practice of noticing the everyday nuances of life. It is about being aware
of our breath and all the beauty surrounds us each and everyday.

This is a collection of 30 images that have made me take a moment to pause and yes… breathe.
May they remind you too, of the beauty that is right there, awaiting your glance and deep exhale.

Leaving Home

I speak often of change and the graceful way of accepting it. Regardless though of
how poetic I may make it sound, change more often than not, is undeniably difficult.

This past weekend, I watched my parents decide to move from their town of 50-plus-years
to an independent living community in another city. They will be leaving behind their
home that has been filled with a lifetime together; a place where they built their family
and careers and made deep, long-lasting friends.

A difficult change, most certainly. But my parents exemplify the very essence of what I
write about… the ability to accept transitions and all that they bring (sadness, humor,
anxiety, etc.) with dignity and anticipation for the days ahead.

I ask myself, would I have the courage to do this with such grace? I doubt it. After all
these years, my parents are still showing me the way it’s done.

I went for a walk near my parents home and passed a blooming almond tree that I’ve
photographed forever. Not surprisingly, the blossoms seemed especially gorgeous on
this
particular visit to my home town… a place that I too, will dearly miss.

As I sat at my computer, you kept me company. We
worked together for a long while, each of us pecking
away, looking for that one morsel that would sustain
us, energize us and completely feed our hunger. In
the end, with evidence of leftovers, we both flew
away completely satisfied.

I have been out of the “loop” recently. Hope to make
up for it this week. Wishing each of you a good one!
Thanks for all your visits.

Had the pleasure of being down at the ocean last week
during a VERY low tide. It was accompanied by unusually
warm weather and a full moon that was just spectacular!
One didn’t have to venture out too far to come across
incredible creatures such as this one. Once again I
was awed and reminded that just below the surface of
everything, lies unexpected beauty.

Thanks for all your visits, comments and emails.
Each and everyone are appreciated!

There, within the circle, is the light that always surrounds us.

I have no idea why this circular fence was built, only that
I came upon it in brilliant sunshine. It literally made me
stop and shiver despite the visible warmth that was present.
This structure reminded me of its symbolism… mainly, the
continuation of everything and the light that always
surrounds us along the way.

Every year you arrive early… wet, windswept and with promise
that despite the steel-blue skies, there will be color.

There is a field next to my home that grows wild
with the winter rains. It often holds the first
signs of something beyond the chilling cold.
Each year, this particular flower shows up in
her almost-too-bright color. Like clockwork,
I too can be found in field, photographing her
as she whispers her perpetual promise… despite
the steel-blue skies, despite the sadness,
there will be color.

Love in the Season of Light

It all remains a mystery…

the quietness, the joys, the sorrows…
the miracle of life and all the seasons
that cycle again and again, bringing us back
to this time of year.

Ultimately, in the end and in the beginning,
it is the love and the bond between each of us
that gathers up all the uncertainties
and brings everything into perfect focus.

Wishing for each of you, the gift of LOVE in this season of Light.

Autumn always ushers in a winter chill and this year is no exception.
With her blistery winds and cold rains, comes the most spectacular sunsets.
And though we are ready to hibernate in our warm homes, we venture outside
knowing… our souls will be filled with very warmth we gaze upon.

All this is true, of course, if you live in California (smile).

Floating on the Sea

Floating on the sea of life is no easy task but there are
a few steps that help...

1. believe that you really can float
2. relax while doing so (you know... deep breaths)
3. trust that the tides will take you where you need to go
4. open your eyes every now and then to see where you are

I watched this guy float for almost an hour. He slept most of
the time as the sea gently rocked him. Sitting on shore,
I waited for the tide to bring him close enough for me to
get a good look at him. Lucky for me, he drifted just a few
feet away and awoke in time for a a few snapshots.

Thanks for your visits, everyone! May we all experience
the art of floating...

Glorious Glow

Bright, brilliant sunshine recently basked the CA
coastal landscape, revealing all the dried, winter-like
vegetation that had resulted after months of summer
fog. Everything (including myself) seemed to reach
for the light, clearly having missed it.

This warmth was short-lived though as the dampness
has returned again, bringing with it absolute silence,
interrupted only by the fog horn. Even the birds seem
to stop their activity to listen.

In all the stillness is the quiet activity of Autumn as she
walks through the trees, gently touching her leaves
and transporting the summer's warmth into them,
creating the most glorious glow and the memory of
what was and what soon will be... a new season.

There is a loneliness that descends on the coast in the summertime.
The fog sits heavy as does the quietness. It is a season that I love
yet can only immerse myself in for a limited time. Eventually, a
restlessness starts to take over, a longing for something that is
undefinable and often times, unreachable. I always think it is
sunshine that I need but it goes far beyond this.

Life flies back and forth between living and longing.
It is a mystical and mysterious journey
and a beautiful one at that.

Last August when I went to Zion Nat'l Park, I realized I was very close
to an animal sanctuary that I had admired for many years. I had the
opportunity to visit this place and was amazed at what I found. Quite
honestly, I expected a layed-back atmosphere with happy animals
running around. I did find happy animals (dogs, cats, pigs, donkeys,
horses, rabbits...) but this place was by far, the most professionally
run animal shelter that I had ever seen.....

Meet Millie... my parents' current tormentor and charmer.

When my "senior" parents recently lost their dog of 13 years, my siblings quickly encouraged them to get a new pal. Mind you, I thought an older dog would be perfect, matching the pace of my parents' lifestyle. But along came this bouncing, curious puppy with all her overwhelming, energetic charm. Of course, I use the word charm; my parents would call it otherwise. She has kept them hopping, jumping, cursing and "occasionally" laughing, as she tugs and digs her way through home and garden. (Don't worry, Mom & Dad, she'll outgrow this in a FEW years!)

A Week In The Arizona Desert

Recently seeking an entirely new environment, I found it in the Arizona Desert. Ironically, the landscape reminded me of the ocean here at home (California) in its vastness, sense of space and found serenity. It is a place that is profoundly quiet yet is abundant with life... cottontails, hawks, hummingbirds, lizards, wild pigs and more.

Bob (my husband) and I hiked many trails and were fortunate enough to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. As we walked through the Hohokan Indian ruins, a storm came in just as the sun was setting. On that particular evening, I felt like I had found the gateway to the heavens in that gorgeous Arizona sky.
I hope you are all enjoying your summer. I want to thank you for your continued support while I continue to rebuild Daily Walks. I'll let you know when my blog is up and running again... in the meantime, enjoy my images via my Gallery.

All the best to each of you.

Due to a database failure, my blog has been lost. The good news is.... I will be rebuilding it, editing out the older images and filling it with new. In the meantime, I've added a new "Galleries" page on my website which links to old and new images for your viewing: http://www.dianevarner.com/galleries.html

So, although feeling a bit Shipwrecked, Daily Walks will return. Thank you to each of you for all your support and emails that I have received. I really appreciate it!

I'll keep you posted via Twitter and this feed.

— Diane Varner
